In light of the questions regarding the new policy surrounding backpacks/personal items in the classroom, and in striving to always provide clear communication to our school community, please see below information that will hopefully answer some of the questions regarding the same.

Please know that no decision made by the BCHS SBDM council or administration is made lightly or without consideration of the best interests of the students and staff being at the forefront. We appreciate in advance your trust and support as we continue to do what we believe will best enhance safety, avoid distractions, and reduce disciplinary issues in our classrooms, all in an effort to foster an optimal environment for student success.

The graphic explains a new school policy requiring students to keep backpacks and other personal items in lockers during the school day. A blue banner reads, "A New Policy for Safer Classrooms and Stronger Learning." The poster states that regular backpacks may be carried to and from school but must be stored in lockers during the school day. It explains that the policy is intended to enhance safety, reduce classroom disruptions, and reduce trip-and-fall accidents. Approved classroom bags include a clear stadium bag, clear pouch, or clear handbag, with a maximum size of 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. A section for girls notes that a small pouch may be carried inside a clear bag to discreetly store feminine hygiene products. The bottom of the graphic states that clear bags are available through the Family Resource and Youth Services Center (FRYSC) for any student who needs one and encourages families to contact FRYSC for assistance. Icons throughout the graphic depict a prohibited backpack, lockers, approved clear bags, safety, students, trip hazards, and a small pouch.

As part of our commitment to providing a safe, organized, and distraction-free learning environment, every in-person student has been assigned a personal locker for the upcoming school year.

This change will help students stay organized, minimize classroom distractions, and keep the focus where it belongs—learning.

Students are expected to store backpacks, jackets, coats, and other bulky personal items in their lockers during the school day. Students may carry one approved clear bag for essential personal items and bring instructional materials into classrooms. The graphic emphasizes that the change is intended to improve school safety, organization, and reduce classroom distractions. 🔒 Locker Assignments: Find and organize your new locker so you're ready to go on the first morning.

📚 Academic Support & VLA Check-In: Learn about the academic help and tutoring resources available this year, and complete your Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) check-in if applicable.

Show up in your navy, gold, and maroon to show off that Colonel pride! We can't wait to see you all there and gear up for a fantastic year ahead.

Bourbon County Schools will host the first Local Planning Committee public forum on Wednesday June 24th, 2026. The meeting will take place in the Boardroom of Central Office. The forum will last from 5:00 - 5:30 PM. This will be the first of 3 public forums held in the community. The purpose of the meeting will be to hear public opinion related to Bourbon County Schools facilities. These comments will be shared with the Local Planning Committee to be included in the newest District Facility Plan. We look forward to hearing from you!
